3. Building friendships and support networks

We all need to have a variety of people involved in our lives, not just our parents. A network of friends and family is especially important to people with learning disabilities who may outlive their parents or other close family.

Some people with learning disabilities have told us that they would like to know that other people will be around for them when their parents pass away, to make sure they have a good life and are safe and well.

This section looks at:

  • building friendships with other people with learning disabilities
  • involving siblings
  • building a network of friends or circle of support.
