There are an estimated 800,000 adults with learning disabilities of working age, of which only 11% have a paid job - often a part time one.
Despite this, many people express an interest in exploring work opportunities. One less frequently explored option is that of self employment.
In Business seeks to support the development of self employment and small business options for people with learning disabilities.
Self employment is about owning the business, taking risks and reaping the rewards. It can also offer greater flexibility and control over one's working life.
The In Business programme runs from June 2007 - May 2009. During this time we will:
- identify and develop pilot sites in England
- create a range of opportunities in both rural and urban settings
- work with local authorities, colleges and voluntary sector agents
- develop local networks
- raise awareness of self employment as an option
- link with mainstream business support
- assist with business research and planning
- support people to set up their own business
- capture learning, examples of good practice and the effects of business culture on day service modernisation
- produce a step by step guide to the process involved
The In Business programme offers 2 plain English Guide Books to help people who have an idea for becoming self-employed.
- The Business Planning Quick Guide gives an overview of what needs to be done when setting up a business and becoming self employed. It provides information on what is needed and links to where you can get more help.
