Developing partnership working

We think it is important for people with learning disabilities to be involved in decisions about their own lives.

We want to help people with learning disabilties and their families find out about the different things they can do.

We are helping people in councils and health services to work together so they can help people with learning disabilities better.

Partnership for inclusion

We drew up the 'Keys to Partnership' advice for the Department of Health and 'Frequently Asked Questions'  for the Valuing People Support Team.

We are supporting the 'Valuing People' theme in the Beacon Scheme and have drawn up a good practive guide on councils including people with learning disabilities as equal citizens. More information on the learning disabilities section of the I&DeA website

We are also supporting some local authorities to review their formal partnerships, including how Partnership Boards work and their use of Flexibilities (Health Act 1999).

Integrated team working

We did research and we support partnership boards with their reviews of community learning disability teams. We encourage social workers and health professionals who specialise in working with people with learning disabilities to:

  • understand the types of support and ways of working wanted by people with learning disabilities, families, service providers and mainstream services

  • understand person centred practice, self-directed support and individualised funding

  • look at how well they work with staff from other services

  • revise their working practices accordingly
