Our work on supporting families

Family group
The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities believes it is important to support the families of people with learning disabilities.

Our work makes sure that families can have their say.

We help services to be more aware of the needs that families have.

Current projects

Antenatal Screening: a project which aims to gather the views and experiences from expectant parents and healthcare professionals about the antenatal screening process.

Mutual Caring Project: a project to understand and raise awareness about the needs of people with learning disabilities who are carers in older families.

Recognising Fathers : a project to develop a better understanding of the issues faced by the fathers of children with a learning disability.

Past projects

First Impressions : a small research study which looked at the emotional and support needs of families during their child's early years, from the diagnosis of a learning disability to 5 years of age. We produced an information booklet for parents and a report with recommendations for practitioners and service commissioners.

Learning with Families: a training pack for staff working in learning disability services. The pack was developed by family carers who are encouraged to deliver the training alongside professionals.

Older Families Initiative: a programme to share good practice on what local authority areas can do to improve support for older families with learning disabilties.
