People with learning disabilities are increasingly taking on leadership roles and positions
where they create and influence change. However, there is little opportunity for them to
develop the skills to take on positions of leadership.
In this programme, we aim to support participants to consider their leadership skills and to get involved in practical training so they can fine-tune their skills. The programme will provide a comprehensive framework for participants to develop their knowledge, skills and behaviour to become innovative leaders.
We are also developing a training pack that can be used to develop similar programmes.
We want to ensure that people with learning difficulties can access leadership training
that is high quality and within their financial reach.
The pack is being developed with Grapevine who run an active learning programme in Coventry.
Participants who piloted the first draft of the pack felt that it helped them to develop new skills and be more confident, as well as being great fun.
The Learning for Leadership programme offers participants:
- Increased knowledge and understanding of disability, leadership and change management
- Opportunities for mutual learning, support and to become part of a learning network providing a way of finding shared solutions to obstacles
- Opportunities to practise leadership skills, receive feedback and reflect on leadership style and competencies
- An active learning opportunity with skilled tutors supporting them on a personal project
- An opportunity to observe themselves in action through the use of video and being shadowed and to examine their own skills
- The chance to shadow a known leader, identify the learning gained from this and to learn about different leadership and learning styles
- An opportunity to consider how the political structure works, how policies are developed and how to influence this
- Techniques and methods of evaluation
