What kind of future: leading meaningful lives after school and college

This 2 year project will focus on finding new approaches to help young people with Down’s syndrome to be included after school and college. 

From the scoping study and consultation conducted as part of this project, we know that many young people find it hard to:

 

  • build and maintain social networks
  • find a range of opportunities including work.

 

Even those who attended mainstream school find it find to move on to paid employment.

We have some anecdotal evidence that young people lead more active lives and have a greater community involvement if they have experienced some of the more innovative approaches including:

 

  • person-centred planning
  • self-advocacy
  • circle of support
  • individual budgets such as Direct Payments

 

We want to collate evidence from some of the young people who have benefited from the innovative approaches. We will then produce a web based booklet promoting their experiences.

 

We will then test out the efficacy of these approaches with other young people. The project will culminate in a final booklet to be disseminated widely to young people with Down’s syndrome and their families.
