What about Us? Promoting emotional wellbeing for young people with learning disabilities in inclusive schools and colleges

Young people with learning disabilities are more likely to experience emotional problems than young people generally.

This project worked with pupils, students and teachers to find better ways to include young people with learning disabilties in the life of mainstream schools and colleges.

What we did

The project explored ways of overcoming barriers to involvement in terms of:

  • the curriculum, teaching and learning
  • social and extra-curricular activities
  • pastoral care and tutorial support
  • planning for transitions, including the transition to life after full-time education.

The project used a participative action research approach, working directly with young people with learning disabilities.

There were clusters of case study sites in 3 different areas of England. Each cluster will include a college, 2 mainstream secondary schools and, where appropriate, a linked special school or unit.
