Charity appalled by findings of Healthcare Commission audit of services for people with learning difficulties

News Release, 3 December 2007

Alison Giraud-Saunders, Co-Director at the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, today said:

“We are appalled to learn of the Healthcare Commission’s findings. It is shocking that many services are still failing to support disabled people to have a decent quality of life, with respect for their dignity and human rights.

In order to make sure improvements happen, it will be important that the Healthcare Commission does the follow-up checks they have promised. However, more thought must also be given to the kinds of services that are needed for the future and who can best deliver them. Without this it will be difficult to ensure that people with learning difficulties across the country receive support that is truly satisfactory.”
