Charity welcomes government’s extra funding for disabled children, young people and their families

News Release, 10 December 2007

Responding to the recent announcement by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, said:

"For families, raising a child with a learning disability can be exceptionally hard work – family members often become full-time carers and not only is this emotionally exhausting but there are often financial implications too – many families end up on the breadline or get into serious debt.

“By increasing the number of short-break opportunities, people with learning disabilities and their families will experience a better quality of life. Breaks of this nature, if flexible and accessible, will be particularly appreciated by families in emergencies and by those with complex needs.

“We are also pleased that grants through the Family Fund have been extended to those aged 16 and 17 – as this is a time when families feel under further pressure financially.”
