News Release, 5 May 2006
The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, in conjunction with the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, has produced a DVD documentary to help young people with learning disabilities. Young people with learning disabilities can experience emotional problems such as depression and anxiety, yet are often not given adequate help or support.
The What’s Happening? documentary features the diaries of three young people with learning disabilities who have developed emotional difficulties. It aims to help similar young people manage their problems and inform parents and learning disability and mental health professionals about the problems these young people face.
Myles MacInnes, AKA Mylo, who recently shot to fame with his debut album Destroy Roll & Roll, filmed an introduction for the documentary. Hesays of his involvement;
“I was really keen to be part of this …… growing up is hard … and my brother has got very mild learning difficulties. He’s just 21 and he’s had a tough time. He went to Glasgow … to go to nautical college but after two or three years the council decided it was too expensive to keep him there with a full-time carer, so he’s back [at home] trying to figure out his next move. I’ve been worried about him [and] my mum because…it’s a full-time thing for her looking after him and … what he needs is some support from outside the family to enable him to get the most out of his life.”
Hazel Morgan, Co-Director of the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities says;
“We hope this will create a much better understanding of the emotional needs of young people with learning disabilities and indicate ways that services can respond sensitively and effectively.”
What’s Happening? was recently launched at the Scottish Parliament and is part of the Foundation’s Making us Count research programme. Copies are priced £15 for professionals and £5 for young people with learning disabilities and their carers.
