Overhaul of care system needed to protect vulnerable adults, says Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities

News Release, 15 June 2006

In response to the Safe and Sound? report, Alison Giraud-Saunders, Co-Director of the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities today said:

“Dangerous workers are almost certainly slipping through the net because of inadequate staff safety checks. But we need to look further than just vetting procedures to protect vulnerable adults. The Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA) register only lists those who are banned from working with vulnerable people within certain services. It does not cover day centres or NHS settings. Care staff and others also need adequate training, supervision and support to spot signs of abuse and neglect. We need a complete overhaul of the system to ensure that vulnerable adults, including those with learning disabilities, are kept safe.”
