Launch of embargoed research report on meeting the spiritual needs of people with learning disabilities on 27 April 2004, at Portcullis House, Westminster.
Advance News Release, 22 March 2004
Faith Leaders, service providers, experts in the field of learning disabilities, and MPs will gather at Portcullis House, Westminster on 27 April for the launch of an embargoed report: 'Why are we Here? Meeting the Spiritual Needs of People with Learning Disabilities'.
Speakers include Indarjit Singh, Editor of the Sikh Messenger and regular contributor to Thought for the Day, and Dame Stephanie Shirley, Chair of The Shirley Foundation, which funded the research programme.
The report is based on research carried out by Professor John Swinton with people with learning disabilities and their parents and carers. It will be followed by a series of seminars and the launch of a good practice guide for services.
The report is aimed at: faith communities, care providers, support staff, service user groups, professional bodies, family carers, training providers and policy makers.
The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities believes that people with learning disabilities should be supported to explore their own spiritual and religious needs. Freedom of thought, conscience and religion is enshrined in the Human Rights Act.
Previous research by the Foundation has shown that spirituality is a neglected area in the care of people with learning disabilities.
