Charity launches mental health promotion resources for young people with learning disabilities and their families

News Release, 2 July 2003

The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities launches two information booklets today to help support the mental health and emotional wellbeing of young people with learning disabilities.

The booklets come in response to the findings of an inquiry carried out by the Foundation, which found that young people with learning disabilities are four times as likely to experience a mental health problem as other young people.

"All About Feeling Down - A Booklet for Young People with Learning Disabilities" draws directly on the sources of happiness and sadness reported by more than one hundred young people with learning disabilities, revealing who they talked to and what support they needed when they felt sad.

The second booklet, "Meeting the emotional needs of young people with learning disabilities: A booklet for parents and carers" draws again on the first hand experiences of young people and family carers who told the Inquiry committee what they needed. It describes ways of supporting teenagers and young adults to feel good about themselves. It also suggests how to gain support for young people if they have mental health difficulties.

Hazel Morgan, Head of the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, said:

"These information booklets are a very practical step to improve the emotional wellbeing of young people with learning disabilities. Colourfully illustrated, practical and easy to use, they will go a long way in helping to support young people’s mental health."

The two booklets are available to download from the booklets page - click on their titles below:
