News Release, 11 July 2001
A new booklet, Get Moving!, has been produced by the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, part of the Mental Health Foundation, to help people with learning disabilities make their own decisions about where to live.
Get Moving! describes a variety of living arrangements - such as living with a family, living in a group home or living alone - and analyses the benefits and responsibilities of each. It encourages the individual to discuss their situation with someone that they trust and provides a checklist of issues that they should talk through. It provides real life examples and four pages of resources for people with learning disabilities, their families and supporters. The booklet can be read on its own, with a carer or in a group.
"We believe that there is a close relationship between independence and choice and that the freedom and ability to make informed life-changing decisions is really important. By using plain English and clear illustrations to describe different housing options this booklet can make it easier for people with learning disabilities to consider their future and talk about where they might like to live." says Hazel Morgan, head of the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities.
When used in conjunction with the Foundation's earlier publication, Leaving Home, Moving On, a booklet designed to be an introduction to housing options for parents and carers of people with learning disabilities, it will help to ensure that a co-ordinated and thorough approach is taken and that the options and issues of moving are discussed in an understandable and non-threatening way.
The booklet was written by the Norah Fry Research Centre and compiled with valuable input from the members and staff of the Speedwell Centre in Bristol, who helped to ensure that it remained clear and relevant.
