News Release, 31 May 2000
The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities has published Living Alone or With Others, a guide to help social workers and other professionals plan with families of teenagers and adults with learning disabilities.
It is estimated that about half of all people with learning disabilities live with their families and every year many parents and carers face the challenge of planning for their son or daughter’s future. This detailed publication explains the different housing and support options available for people with learning disabilities. It is a useful tool for family carers, social workers and anyone else who wants to find out about more about this complex area.
This twenty-six-page report covers detailed information on:
- Housing options: what the possibilities are, types of accommodation available, living alone or with others, help with buying a property, staying in the family home, buying a house together with a group of parents or relatives, as well as information on adapting properties to suit individual needs.
- Support offered: provision, payment, people with high support needs, and housing benefit.
- Local Authority responsibilities including: assessment, services available and steps to be taken
- Sources of further help: a list of organisations to contact for further information
Hazel Morgan, Programmes Manager for the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities says, "Many parents and carers who are worried about their son or daughter’s future may delay making a decision until there is a family crisis, and they are no longer able to continue caring. Living Alone or With Others is specially designed to help professionals encourage them to tackle this difficult dilemma and help them to start thinking ahead."
