Letter sent to The Daily Telegraph

March 2005

Dear Sir,

In Special needs schools save money, Charlotte Moore highlights the realities of raising a child with a learning disability.

Special schools can play a critical role in supporting children with learning disabilities and their families. If they continue to close, increasing numbers of children with learning disabilities are likely to lose the expertise that the schools provide.

Each child needs to be assessed individually. Inclusion into mainstream education can be beneficial to many children with learning disabilities, but it does not suit all.

Mainstream and special schools need to be encouraged to exchange good practice with one another in a move towards providing a better educational experience for children with learning disabilities. Only then will parents be given the option to choose a school that is truly beneficial for their child.
