Letter sent to Community Care

4 July 2006

Dear Sir,

Your report on embryo screening (Whose Right to Decide? 29 June) highlights some key arguments, but I was disappointed that nothing was mentioned about the information needs of health care professionals who support women and their partners.

Prospective parents must be supported to make informed decisions about embryo or antenatal screening. Sadly, many women are not getting the balanced information they need and can still encounter negative attitudes towards disability. Many health professionals who offer screening know very little about raising a child with a learning disability and therefore cannot inform or support prospective parents well.

By educating health care professionals better, pregnant women and their partners can be supported to make well informed decisions about screening. The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities will shortly be working with both expectant mothers and health care professionals, including midwives, to improve information and training.
