Letter sent to The Observer

26 May 2005

Dear Sir

Martin Bright highlights how the Government’s controversial Anti Social Behaviour Orders can lead to discrimination towards children with autism (Children with autism the target of Asbos, 22 May).

Children with an autistic spectrum disorder need proper understanding and support to help them acquire practical and social skills. Any targeting of these children, if they do not appear to conform, must not be tolerated. Society must have a greater understanding of their needs.

It is vital that current legislation be re-examined to ensure that children with an autistic spectrum disorder have their basic human rights protected.
