Short breaks and respite care

Children and adults with learning disabilities may spend time away from their family with substitute families or in residential homes.

These schemes are usually run by local authorities, voluntary organisations or health services.

Short breaks can be enjoyable for children and adults and provide a break for carers.

Shared care schemes provide short breaks with substitute families. More provision of this kind is needed to meet demand.
