Health needs of people with learning disabilities

Health (Large)
Like everyone else, people with learning disabilities need good health care, but it can sometimes be hard for them to get proper care and treatment.

It can also be hard for them to get screening for diseases like cancer and to find accessible information about healthy living.

People with learning disabilities are more likely than other people to have certain health problems. Up to one third may have epilepsy, a third are likely to have problems with their hearing and/or eyesight, and they may be more at risk of mental ill-health.

Health services are beginning to think more about the needs of people with learning disabilities. This is important because untreated health problems can have a major effect on a person’s quality of life.
